MATERIALS
Fabric for pillow front: 17" × 17"
Batting: 19" × 19"
Back of quilted piece (will not be seen): 19" × 19"
Fabric for pillow back: 1⁄2 yard
Binding: 1⁄4 yard
Temporary fabric pencil or marker
16" pillow form
Walking foot (recommended)
MAKE IT
1. Make 4 marks on each edge of the pillow front, measuring them 21⁄2" and 61⁄2" away from each corner. Mark diagonal lines connecting the points with a ruler and a temporary fabric marker.
2. Layer the pillow front with the batting and the quilting backing. Baste. See Layering and Basting Quilts and Projects (page 137).
3. With the machine set for straight stitching, sew along the marked lines. Use a walking foot if you have it. Remove any marked lines that are visible after you have stitched over them.
4. With the machine set for free-motion quilting, quilt the pillow top. Switch thread colors between columns.
5. Trim the quilted piece to 161⁄2" × 161⁄2" square.
6. From the pillow backing fabric, cut 2 pieces 11" × 161⁄2".
7. On each backing piece, fold down 1⁄2" along a long side and press; then fold once more and press again, so the raw edge is contained within the fold. With the machine set for straight stitching, topstitch.
